Jamaican Jerk Hut Signage

12 January 2009

Simply put, Jamaica is an amazing island. Since Bob spawned his chart topping records all the way through the 70's, Jamaica has been a growing vacation hot spot. Ironically, it has been historically one of the most dangerous places on earth, but it's music, culture, and cuisine continues to draw such a huge vacation crowd even to this day.

The cuisine of preference in this colorful land is of course, jerk chicken. Some of the best jerk chicken comes from jerk shacks along the road. The island is covered in them, all the way from Kingston to Montego Bay. I've pulled together some photos of jerk shack signage, which is all hand-painted typography.

You won't find any four color process printing, no led-backlit displays. Just a guy with the thickest Jamaican Patois accent you've ever heard, some cold Red Stripes, and chicken that tastes like it came from Hell's Inferno.

Makes me want to break out the Appleton's and fire up the grill. I remember 1 shack I found on the beach late at nite on my honeymoon. I asked how the jerk flavor is on fish and the jamaican dude's eyes lit up and proclaimed it the best in the world. It was purty darn good.

You're brave tho, I wouldn't have the nuts to pull over at too many of these random spots without a guide. Poor jamaica :(
